Mormonism is a religious practice that branches off of the Christian faith. It is also familiarly known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Founded by six individuals in eighteen thirty, with Joseph Smith being the primary leader during the formation of this belief system. It was recognized and believed by prophet Joseph Smith that “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints came into being ‘for the purpose of building up my church and kingdom on the earth, and to prepare my people for the time when I shall dwell with them, which is nigh at hand’(D&C 104:59)”(Davies 9). The origination of Mormonism occurred in upstate New York where prophet Joseph Smith believed and announced that “…he was chosen of God to restore the lost gospel and to initiate the last dispensation of time”(Young 82). As the church began expanding slowly in New York, the amount of persecution also rose as well. With this realization, Smith and his followers decided to migrate west towards Ohio, where there had been rapid growth of Mormon believers, as well as greater hopes of gaining more acceptance. After this migration, Mormons had expanded to Ohio, Missouri, as well as Illinois. Following the migration, prophet Joseph Smith was murdered in 1844 leaving his predecessor, Brigham Young, to lead the Mormon Church. Brigham Young had accumulated almost one hundred and fifteen thousand followers in America by the time of his death in eighteen seventy-seven. Many of the Mormon followers and believers were attracted to this religion because they “…were looking for some belief which would be a rock of refuge on an uncertain frontier”(Young 82). So as you find out this topic is quite hard for freshman students, and we hardly can say that there are free essays about religion. However, researchers can browse free essays at thefreeessays. This essay will focus on the development of Mormonism within the American context and how this development has been significant to the Mormon in modern society of America.
